A new species of Calomys Waterhouse (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae)from the Cerrado of Central Brazil Zoologia
Bonvicino,Cibele R.; Lima,José F. S.; Almeida,Francisca C..
A new Brazilian Calomys Waterhouse, 1837 species is described based on morphologic and karyologic data. This species is endemic to the Cerrado of Central Brazil and allopatric with all other species of the genus Calomys. Its chromosome complement (2n = 46, AN = 66) is different from those described in other Calomys species. Morphometric analysis significantly distinguished this new species from other Calomys of the Brazilian fauna like C. callosus (Renger, 1830), C. expulsus (Lund, 1841) and C. tener (Winge, 1887) and placed it among the large-sized Calomys.

A revision of Dichotomius (Homocanthonides) Luederwaldt, 1929 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Maldaner,Maria E.; Valois,Marcely C.; Vaz-de-Mello,Fernando Z..
ABSTRACT The monospecific subgenus Dichotomius (Homocanthonides) is revised and its single species, Dichotomius (H.) smaragdinus (Perty, 1830) is redescribed and distinguished from other Dichotomius species. Dichotomius (H.) smaragdinus is a polymorphic species and its distribution comprises the Brazilian Cerrado. For the first time, morphological variation and male genital organ are described and illustrated. We believe that this species might be endangered due to extensive deforestation of Brazilian Cerrado by agricultural and pasture expansion. Thus, we highlight the importance of preserving this very unusual Dichotomius species.

Agriculture, habitat loss and spatial patterns of human occupation in a biodiversity hotspot Scientia Agricola
Diniz-Filho,José Alexandre Felizola; Oliveira,Guilherme de; Lobo,Fábio; Ferreira,Laerte Guimarães; Bini,Luis Mauricio; Rangel,Thiago Fernando Lopes Valle Brito.
The Cerrado biome, the second largest biome in Neotropical region, consists of a mosaic of different habitat types, ranging from open grasslands to dense woodlands and dry forests. An intensive recent occupation process has transformed it into the most important region for cattle ranching and intensive commodity crops in Brazil. In this study, a macroecological approach was used to evaluate broad-scale spatial patterns of habitat loss in the Brazilian Cerrado, applying a series of spatial autocorrelation and partial regression analyses to understand how the proportion of remaining natural habitats is correlated with socio-economic variables, expressing different dimensions of human occupation and climatic variation. On average, 59% of the area is occupied...

Courtship, vocalization, and tadpole description of Epipedobates flavopictus (Anura: Dendrobatidae) in southern Goiás, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Costa,Ronan Caldeira; Facure,Kátia Gomes; Giaretta,Ariovaldo Antonio.
Epipedobates flavopictus is a diurnal, aposematic dendrobatid with a wide distribution in seasonal wet tropical regions of Brazil. We describe the daily period of vocalization, advertisement call, courtship behavior, and tadpole of E. flavopictus from a previously unknown population in southern Goiás and compare theses features with that of other populations. Studies were carried out in November (2004) and February (2005). We counted the number of calling males and duration of calling bouts in the morning and evening periods. The advertisement call was recorded with a digital recorder. Tadpole description was based on specimens collected in pools. Males called from well-illuminated sites such as rocky fields, rain channels, and borders of riverine forests....

Diversity, activity patterns, and habitat use of the snake fauna of Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park in Central Brazil Biota Neotropica
França,Frederico Gustavo Rodrigues; Braz,Vívian da Silva.
Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park (CVNP) in central Brazil is one of the most important protected areas of Brazilian Cerrado yet the diversity that this park harbors remains unknown for many taxa. From 2006 to 2009, we studied the snake assemblage of CVNP to determine the species composition, abundance, seasonal and daily activity patterns, morphology, and habitat use. We documented 47 snake species from seven families within CVNP, with the most common species being Bothrops marmoratus, Oxyrhopus trigeminus, Crotalus durissus and Bothrops moojeni. The incidence of snakes was highly seasonal and appeared to be associated mainly with rainfall. Daily activity patterns revealed that the majority of snakes are strictly diurnal, whereas others are nocturnal or...

Hematological and parasitological health conditions of the Pale-breasted Thrush (Turdus leucomelas) (Passeriformes: Turdidae) in southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Lobato,Débora N. C.; Braga,Érika M.; Belo,Nayara de O.; Antonini,Yasmine.
From an ecological point of view, parasites are considered important selective forces that influence all aspects of a host's life. The purpose of this study was to assess the health state of Turdus leucomelas Vieillot, 1818 (Turdidae: Passeriformes) inhabiting a Brazilian Cerrado in the breeding and molting seasons through a hematological parameter analysis and an evaluation of infection by blood parasites. The birds were collected with mist-nets, ringed and blood sampled to assess hematological parameters (hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration and white blood cells) and blood parasites. We detected blood parasites through optical microscopy and subsequently used PCR (amplification of the 18sRNA gene) to verify the presence of Plasmodium spp. (avian...

Nitrogen management effects on soil mineral nitrogen, plant nutrition and yield of super early cycle common bean genotypes Agronomy
Nascente, Adriano Stephan; Carvalho, Maria da Conceição Santana; Melo, Leonardo Cunha; Rosa, Paulo Holanda.
This study was conducted to measure the effects of the timing of nitrogen fertilization (NF) on soil N-NH4+ and N-NO3-, macronutrient contents in the leaves and grains, and the grain yield of super early genotypes (SEG) of common bean. Field experiments were performed for four growing seasons in an Oxisol soil in Santo Antônio de Goiás, Brazil, using a randomized block experimental design in a split plot scheme. The plots were planted with common bean SEG, and the subplots were the NF timings, including a treatment without N fertilization. The available soil N with improved fertility and medium to high levels of organic matter were enough to meet the N demands of the common bean crop in order to achieve yields of up to 3,000 kg ha-1. Fertilization with N,...

Nitrogen recovery efficiency for corn intercropped with palisade grass Bragantia
Almeida,Rodrigo Estevam Munhoz de; Favarin,José Laércio; Otto,Rafael; Franco,Henrique; Reis,André Froes Borja; Moreira,Lílian Angélica; Trivelin,Paulo.
ABSTRACT Intercropping corn and palisade grass is a technique to increase straw production, soil C contents, nutrient cycling and crop yield. However, concerns arise from nitrogen (N) uptake by the intercropping crop causing reduction in the yield of the corn. Our objective was to evaluate N recovery efficiency (NRE), and the N dynamics in the soil-plant system in corn intercropped with palisade grass. A field trial was carried out in Bahia, Brazil, evaluating two cropping systems: corn (monoculture) and corn intercropped with palisade grass sowed between rows on the same day as the corn crop, with four replicates in a completely randomized block design. Nitrogen (150 kg∙ha–1of 15N-urea) was applied at sowing to determine NRE, which means the amounts of...

Phosphorus uptake and use efficiency of different cotton cultivars in savannah soil (Acrisol) Agronomy
Marcante, Nericlenes Chaves; Muraoka, Takashi; Bruno, Isabeli Pereira; Camacho, Marcos Antonio.
Low soil phosphorus (P) is a limiting factor for plant growth in the Brazilian savannah, where P diffuses slowly and has a high fixation rate in soil (as Al-P and Fe-P). In this study, we investigated the variation in P uptake by different cotton cultivars grown in savannah soil. We conducted a greenhouse experiment using a fully factorial 2 x 17 randomized design with two P treatments (low P = 20 mg kg-1 and high P = 120 mg kg-1) and 17 cotton cultivars. The plants were potted in Acrisol soil labeled with radioisotope 32P. There was genetic variation in the P use efficiency among the cotton cultivars. The P treatments significantly influenced the dry weight of shoots (DWS), P accumulation, the specific activity of 32P, and the L-value (both the...

Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry applied to the prediction of chemical attributes in Inceptisols under different land uses Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Teixeira,Anita Fernanda dos Santos; Weindorf,David C.; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry has been increasingly adopted for varying studies worldwide. This work aimed at characterizing effects of soil management on the content of chemical elements detected by pXRF in managed and unmanaged areas of Inceptisols, and evaluating the potential of using pXRF data to generate prediction models for soil fertility attributes, evaluating the effect of land uses on such models. Samples were collected in A, B, and C horizons of soils under native forest, native Cerrado, coffee crops with 1 and 5 years of implantation and eucalyptus. Soil fertility attributes were determined through laboratory analyses, whereas, elemental contents were obtained through pXRF analysis. PXRF data were used for modeling...

Soil fertility status, carbon and nitrogen stocks under cover crops and tillage regimes Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Carvalho,Arminda Moreira de; Marchão,Robélio Leandro; Souza,Kleberson Worslley; Bustamante,Mercedes Maria da Cunha.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of cover crops on the soil's chemical fertility, in particular its carbon and nitrogen content, in a Typic Acrustox under conventional and no-tillage corn systems. We hypothesized that the no-tillage system associates with cover crops maintains or increases soil carbon and nitrogen stocks and enhance soil fertility. The no-tillage system did not present higher carbon and nitrogen stocks than conventional tillage, but resulted in higher concentrations of exchangeable bases, higher CEC, and higher base saturation in the surface soil layer, mainly under use of Canavalia brasiliensis. Carbon and nitrogen stocks (up to 40 cm depth) differ significantly between the different cover crop species. The use of...

Yield and nutritive value of the silage of corn intercropped with tropical perennial grasses PAB
Costa,Nídia Raquel; Andreotti,Marcelo; Crusciol,Carlos Alexandre Costa; Lima,César Gustavo da Rocha; Castilhos,André Michel de; Souza,Daniel Martins de; Bonini,Carolina dos Santos Batista; Pariz,Cristiano Magalhães.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare the yield and nutritive value of the silage of corn intercropped with palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha 'Marandu') or guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus 'Tanzânia') with those of the silage of monocropped corn, as well as to evaluate the pasture established in the intercropping systems during two growing seasons (2010-2011 and 2011-2012), in low-altitude Brazilian Cerrado. The treatments consisted of three cropping systems: monocropped corn, corn intercropped with palisade grass, and corn intercropped with guinea grass, with four replicates. Intercropping decreased corn forage dry matter yield for silage; however, due to the addition of grass, total dry matter yield (corn + grass) was similar between...
